About Us

The Sakya Tharig Monastery was established by the fifth Tharig Rinpoche, Jamyang Dhamchoe Nyima in year 1972. The Monastery is registered with the His Majesty's Government of Nepal, and it is being run in accordance with the theme and norms of Buddha Dharma. It belongs to Sakya tradition, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, whose supreme head is His Holiness Sakya Trizin, now residing in India. In the first few years after her inception, Tharig Rinpoche had to run the monastery with meager proceeds with total strength of monks as many as only five. The establishment of the monastery was only possible due to the kind and generous gesture shown by Gya Lama, the then head and care taker of Boudhanath Stupa. The construction works of monastery were accomplished through free labor provided by the devotees of Rinpoche, and some of the local people.

As the time passed, number of monks increased every passing year with uninterrupted admission of young boys. The three fourth of monks of Tharig Monastery hailed from remote Himalayan regions such as ; Dolpo, Manang, Mustang, Yolmo, Walungche and Sindhu Palchowk. As in most monasteries, Tharig monastery also provides free education to the young monks who are either orphans or half orphans. As such, at this juncture, we are happy to inform that, Tharig Monastery has successfully lived up with it's pre-establishment objectives, by providing spiritual as well as modern education to the admitants.

Now, the total strength of monks has reached as many as 140. The Administration Body set up by the monastic community under the farsighted guidance of His Eminence Luding Khenchen Rinpoche and Tharig Rinpoche, deals with the daily operation of the monastery. The sixth Tharig Rinpoche who had established the Tharig monastery, passed away at the age of 79, in year 1998 in Singapore. A new reincarnation had been found, who is recognized by His Holiness Sakya Trizin in year 2003 and now, he is a boy of four years old. On 3rd of February 2006, he was enthroned as the successor of previous Tharig Rinpoche, in the holy presence of His Holiness Sakya Trizin, in the premises of Tharig Monastery at Boudha, Fulwari.

The current organizing team for the Monastery comprises of Two Tulkus, one Khenpo (abbot), one Vajra Master, two prefects, one chanting master, five teachers, one care taker for each of the three main shrines, one care taker for the Lamp offering booth, three managers, one casher, one accountant and one secretary.
